GLAM OR SHAM?: Willow Smith's White Hair at the Emporio Armani Fashion Show for Milan Fashion Week

Willow Smith does it again. The junior pop star (who had us all bopping to her hit single, Whip My Hair) debuted a new hairstyle to whip around at the Emporio Armani Spring 2011 show: a white streak of hair and newly-straightened locks.

It totally looks like she dipped her hair in white paint, but I think it's kind of cool. The outfit embodies her signature funky, mismatched style with black ankle boots on top of black knee boots with white laces on top of white lace-up leggings. How's that for layering?

She also rocks it with a newspaper-printed tee and a black cropped jacket. There's a neon yellow tank poking out at the top and a crossbody bag with chain handle and black and white striped floral detail in the mix. Whew.

 
I totally threw on all the clothes in one drawer and tried to go out when I was nine. One outfit famously involved a pink and white striped onesie, pink tights, white ballet flats and a pink headband. Atleast Willow has enough fashion sense not to match (matching is so corny these days). And personally, I think her style is fun and adorable.

Jada Pinkett-Smith leads a rock band, Wicked Wisdom and stars in TNT's HawthoRNe. Jaden Smith was the "Karate Kid" and recorded a duet with pop phenom, Justin Bieber. Will Smith is highest-paid actor in Hollywood and had a successful rap career. And now Willow Smith is not only a budding fashion icon, but a rapper and singer.

Her new song, which is sure to be a hit among teeny boppers, is called "Whip My Hair." A little grown for a nine-and-a-half-year-old some say, but honestly---I found myself dancing to it. It's a cross between Lil' Mama and Keri Hilson.

GLAM OR SHAM?: Jada Pinkett-Smith's New Haircut

Jada Pinkett-Smith has traded in her braided updos for a funky, rockstar cut. She was recently spotted out and about with husband, Will Smith, showing off her new hairstyle as well as an edgy fashion statement, replete with leather shorts, strappy heels and a sheer gray top. 

She's totally channeling her rockstar alter ego, lead singer of her Wicked Wisdom band, and the style of her rock-and-roll-loving daughter, Willow Smith. 

I love a glammed-up, red-carpet Jada Pinkett-Smith but always feel the rocker look is more her.

Willow Smith to Design a Fashion Line, Says Rihanna is Her Fashion Icon

Remember when we discussed Willow Smith's funky style? Most of you believed she was picking out her own crazy outfits and Mom, Jada Pinkett, was letting her walk out the house in them. Well, we were wrong.

It turns out the budding fashionista has the same stylist as Rihanna, which isn't completely far-fetched considering Rih's head-turning looks. That stylist, the amazing Mariel Haenn, told HollywoodLife.com the backstory behind Willow's daring style. She said that Willow admires Rih's look, weighs in on her outfits (which she prefers to be more rockstar than princess) and is starting her own fashion line! Gasp.


Will more teens walk around looking like this? Only time will tell...

On Rihanna:


“Willow is definitely inspired by Rihanna’s style,” Mariel Haenn tells HollywoodLife.com. “We make an effort to give Willow her own style, so as not to be a mini-version of Rihanna, but Willow really knows what she likes and what she doesn’t like, and she’s vocal about it.”


Mom, Jada Pinkett's input:


“Jada said upfront that she didn’t want us to dress them like standard kids, like with Sesame Street T-shirts,” Mariel says with a laugh. “And the kids really like dressing as adults and hope that adults will want to dress like them. But Jada will put her foot down if there’s something she doesn’t like, though if the kids really love it, she’ll usually let it pass.”


On Future Clothing Line: 


"With Rihanna, pretty soon after she came on the scene, you started seeing designers from Forever 21 to Gucci coming out with styles mimicking her look. We hope the same thing happens here, but I think the ultimate goal is for Willow and Jaden to have their own line."

GLAM OR SHAM?: Willow and Jada Pinkett Smith's Braided Mohawks...or Something

 Braids are the style of the summer, and Jada Pinkett nailed the look recently at the Karate Kid premiere with a sleek, braided updo.

Now, she's taken the trend to an unprecedented level with a half-up, half-down style that looks like braid extensions gathered in a fishtail French braid on top.

 Jada complemented her hairstyle with a black and white jumpsuit, a black blazer and some fierce black tie-up pumps.

Her daughter, Willow, continued to flaunt her funky fashion sense with a military jacket adorned with studs and embellishments on the shoulders, leather pants and her favorite black work boots. She also rocked a braided mohawk like Mom, but her hair on the side is shaved.

 What's the verdict on their hair---and fashions? Glam or a Sham?

Leave Willow Smith Alone: The 9-year old Faces Criticism for Funky Outfits and Budding Music Career

While many critics are claiming Willow Smith shouldn't be allowed to flaunt her funky fashion sense, I am all for it.

Why do you ask? Well, growing up I was always weird (read: highly-creative, unique sense of style) and my mother's decision to nurture my artistic spirit and love for fashion is why I have the job I do now. (Anyone who saw my preschool picture in my favorite white and purple striped jumpsuit, white ballet flats, purple headband and fierce hand-on-the-hip pose can attest to this).

I think it's great to embrace and even encourage your child to be unique, free and comfortable in their own skin; it goes a long way in building their self-esteem and teaching them it's okay to be different.

So my take: bring on the half-shaved mohawk, the Converse shoe-pants, the leopard print ensemble if that's how she'd love to dress.

The full-blown entertainment career at the age of nine, however, may be another story. Just yesterday, Mother Jada Pinkett announced that Willow is gearing up for her debut album. See her quote below:

"I have always had a love for music, always, always, and always. I probably started to pursue it a little late in life. But it was always a passion of mine. I had always been too afraid to venture into music, but I decided when I was about 30 to just go for it. I started a metal band called Wicked Wisdom. I toured and I loved it...But soon after, my kids' careers started taking off, so I sacrificed it. I am pleased to say my daughter, Willow, will be putting out an album soon and I look forward to enjoying music through her creations. So I am excited about that, and she's pretty awesome," Jada said.

To be fair, Willow is not the first kid star---and she has her Mom guiding her every step of the way. But when I think of how the music industry operates, from its debauchery to the leeches that lurk at every star-studded corner, I can't help but wonder if it's the right place for a developing child. (We all saw what happened to Michael Jackson...RIP).

Magazine GLAM or SHAM?: Jada Pinkett-Smith Goes Naked on the Cover of ESSENCE

Joining the recent trend of nude celebs (Kim Kardashian, Joy Bryant, Catherine Zeta Jones, Christina Aguilera, Claudia Schiffer...shall I go on?) Jada Pinkett-Smith bares all for the June cover of ESSENCE magazine. On the second cover, she wears a minidress and rocks glorious, voluminous curls.

While the gorgeous actress and mother of two can do no wrong in my eyes, I have to question why celebrities are baring it all with a renewed sense of vigor and frequency in these past couple of months. Is it to make a statement (Jada's statement is apparently for her daughter, pint-size fashionista Willow, to embrace her body)? Or to show something new on your (sixth) cover of the same magazine?

We explored the need for magazine covers to feature new subjects and I'm starting to think their answer is run the same celebrity, but naked this time to show readers something they haven't seen.

Is it working? Are we willing to buy the same star on the same mag if they're in the nude? I'm not completely sold...though Jada Pinkett-Smith's skin is flawlessly smooth (what beauty products does she use? I need that glow in my life).

WOULD YOU WEAR?: Willow Smith's Converse Sneaker Pants

It's no surprise that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith's children are creative. But while Jaden Smith is starring in the Karate Kid remake, Willow Smith is turning heads on the orange carpet.

The pint-size fashionista pushed the envelope in a pair of pink custom Converse Extension I sneaker pants, a striped shirt, white jacket and matching sunglasses. Very cool!

The Converse sneaker pants don't look completely wearable (i.e. they seem like they are uncomfortable to get on) but the concept is supercool. They're designed for Converse by Daryl van Wouw.

GLAM OR SHAM?: Jada Pinkett at the 2010 Kids' Choice Awards

Whether dressy or casual, Jada Pinkett Smith is a style icon on the red carpet. She wears looks that compliment her petite frame and highlight her perpetually glowing skin.

Last night's Kids' Choice Awards was no different. The gorgeous actress hit the orange carpet in a pair of bubble shorts that elongated her legs, a white blouse, layered necklaces (with a cross, also seen on Rihanna) and Givenchy sandals (previously spotted on Amerie, below).

Most interesting was her inverted braid high ponytail. Unique and utterly gorgeous on her, in my opinion.
